Enhancing Oncology Practice: The Harborside Advantage

Given the tsunami of new data relevant to diagnosing and treating patients with cancer, the oncology news cycle is now 24/7. To help busy oncology clinicians cut through the noise and figure out what is relevant to them and their patients, Harborside Medical Education (HSME) develops continuing education (CE) that interprets the clinical significance of emerging data and provides recommendations for adopting it appropriately in practice.

The HSME Team

Certified Healthcare CPD Professionals (CHCPs), Exemplary CME Professionals (as recognized by the National Association of Medical Education Companies), and other experienced education specialists comprise the HSME team. We collectively have more than 100 years of CE experience (an average of 18.5 years each), more than 5 decades of which relate specifically to oncology (average of 9.7 years each).

HSME team members are engaged in the CE community. We have served as volunteers and leaders of organizations related to CE for clinicians, including the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions and its Commission for Certification of Healthcare CPD Professionals, the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, the American Association for Cancer Education, and the National Association of Medical Education Companies.

Designing Education to Improve Oncology Practice

The most important elements that oncology clinicians use to decide which CE activities to participate in are the relevance of the topic to their practice, the expertise of the faculty, and the accessibility of the education. HSME education delivers all three.

We provide high-quality, evidence-based educational offerings featuring national and international thought leaders. To facilitate adoption of practice-changing advances and current and evolving standards of care in diagnosis and treatment of patients with solid tumors and hematologic malignancies, HSME uses a variety of educational formats including live events (eg, national and regional live meetings, workshops, panel discussions, and webinars) and enduring activities (eg, on-demand webcasts and podcasts, and print and digital journal supplements and monographs).

Supporting Oncology Clinician-learners

We support oncology clinicians, many of whom rely on CE to help translate the latest research to practice. A key motivator of their participation is their personal professional development—engaging in CE enables them to obtain information they need to provide high quality care.1

HSME develops education for all members of the oncology care team, including physicians (eg, medical and hematologic oncologists) and advanced practitioners (eg, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, physician assistants, and oncology pharmacists), as well as others who diagnose and treat people with cancer (eg, dermatologists, pathologists, pulmonologists, urologists). Our education improves practice for clinicians in both community and academic settings.

Assessing our Impact and Sharing our Results

Based on Moore's outcomes model,2,3 all of our activities are designed to improve learners' knowledge and competence; many are designed to achieve level 5 outcomes (improvement of performance). When appropriate, we also assess and report on collaborative team achievement based on The Expanded Learning Model for Systems (TELMS) framework.4
